Historical & Heritage Sites in Riyadh
Al Diriyah
If you’re interested in learning about Saudi Arabia’s history, al Diriyah is the place where it all started. About 300 years ago, the First Saudi State (the predecessor to modern-day Saudi Arabia) was initially established in al Diriyah, the hometown of the Royal Family.
Al Masmak Fortress
This 150-year-old fortress was one of the first battlegrounds in King Abdulaziz’s campaign to unify Saudi Arabia, and its fall marked the beginning of a new era. Today, tourists can visit the al Masmak heritage museum and stroll through the fortress’s towers, courtyard, and former residential units (which were converted into display halls) to visually explore this symbol of Saudi history.
Al Murabaa Palace
This historical complex was built in 1939, and it consisted of the official residence of King Abdulaziz (modern-day Saudi Arabia’s founder), the then administrative headquarters of the country, and a place for the King to greet and host world leaders and foreign delegations.
Activities & Adventures in Riyadh
Dohoul Shawyah
“Dohoul” formations are similar to sinkholes, and they were formed by ancient rivers that used to run underneath the desert sands of modern-day Saudi Arabia. There are four “dohoul” formations that you may explore, and each of them is unique in its own way. Some contain underground desert vegetation while others are filled with limestones and minerals. The Dahl al Mareeh is a great option for those who want to experience underground camping. To add to that, you can pick between multiple types of caravans, which are designed for exploring the outdoors, from a nearby caravan manufacturing hub.
Rawdat al Khafs (The Garden of al Khafs)
Located in the middle of the desert north of Riyadh, Rawdat al Khafs is rich with flower-filled meadows, lakes, mushroom hills, and scenic, time-worn boulders. It is a great spot for picnics, barbecues, and rock climbing. In fact, you can even mingle with modern-day nomads and ride camels when you visit the nearby al Tawqi Camel Market.
Al Karrarah Lake
Also referred to as the ‘Lake of Liquid Light’, al Karrarah Lake is a water formation in the middle of the desert during the rainy season and an area that’s filled with flowers and acacia trees when the weather is dry. This lake is located within the Kharrarah National Park, an ideal spot for all types of outdoors and adventure enthusiasts, including those who prefer quiet picnics and camel rides as well as travelers that want to experience the adrenaline rush of quad biking, dune bashing/drifting, and sand boarding.
